Tom & Jerry Deluxe Anniversary Collection
Tom Cat, Jerry Mouse, Spike Dog
Hanna Barbera
2 DVD 30 Cartoons
Originally released 1944-2007

Though Tom & Jerry won four consecutive Oscars for Best Short Subject Cartoons Tom and Jerry are often dismissed as second rate by many who focus on Warner Brothers’ Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. The 2 DVD Tom & Jerry Deluxe Anniversary Collection and its Hanna Barbera thirty cartoons sets things straight. The collection features 7 Oscar winners. Some of the shorts here are fullscreen others widescreen. There was no restoration work done on these cartoons so they show dust and specs. This set is going to annoy purists and entertain fans.

The Tom and Jerry Collection has the following disclaimer: The situations and characters portrayed were wrong then and they are wrong now. The cartoons are presented as is because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. This refers to the Black maid  or owner seen and heard in some episodes and some Chinee sight and musical gags.

There are some really great Tom and Jerry cartoons here. A personal favorite is Puss N Tots (DVD 1) where Tom tries to impress a female by using Jerry as a prop in some magic tricks. The cartoon also features a great Jerry in an aquarium gag and a very good Tom and Jerry and the record player routine. Also great is Saturday Evening Puss (the original unedited version) and its gags set to jazz music.

Quite annoying is the Tom and Jerry DVD track list is printed on the reverse side of the cover but it comes in a black i.e. non-transparent clamshell. Duh.

DVD 1 of the Tom and Jerry Collection titled Oscar Winners and Classics features 20 cartoons. The Oscar winning Tom and Jerry cartoons are Yankee Doodle Mouse (1944), Mouse Trouble (1945) Quiet Please (1946), The Cat Concerto  (1947),    The Little Orphan (1949)   The Two Mouseketeers (1952), and Johann Mouse (1953). The other shorts are Puss Gets the Boot, The Midnight Snack, Dog Trouble, Fraidy Cat, Puss N Tots, The Lonesome Mouse, Mouse in Manhattan, The Milky Waif, Saturday Evening Puss,  and the widescreen Touche Pussy Cat, That’s My Mommy, The Egg and Jerry, and Tops With Pops.

Tom & Jerry DVD 2 is titled Through The Years. It Includes Jerry Dances with Gene Kelly in Anchors Aweigh, Tom and Jerry swim with Esther Williams in Dangerous When Wet, Pent-House Mouse, The Cat Above and the Mouse Below, The Cat’s Me-ouch, Cosmic Cat and Meteor Mouse, Jerry’s Country Cousin, Flippin’ Fido, The Karate Guard (2005), and A Game of Mouse and Cat (2007).
