Bowser and Blue are Canada’s most famous performers of humorous songs. Proof is Pull My Finger, one of their many comedy CDs replete with funny tunes in many genres and a couple of sketches.

The very original and enjoyable “We’re Folking Good”, an Irish inspired tune about, well, folk singers and music, opens this great CD. It is not only a great little ditty but displays the musical and writing talents of George Bowser and Rick Blue. Of course, many a bad pun is made and this might folk you up for life but that is the price you have to be willing to pay. This is followed by “Pull My Finger”, a gentle reminiscence of a practical-joke prone grandfather. There is something very kiddie song about this comical tune but this is of course a misleading first impression. The third song, “Mine, All Mine” has a distinct Robbie Burns feel to it and is almost as good as the classic Jim Croce rendition of The Ball of Kerrymuir on Final Tour Live.

Bowser & Blue are also great stand-up comics. Things You’ll Never Hear Your Wife Say is a Late Night With David Letterman Top Ten like list. The audience very much appreciates this list and also appreciates its counterpart Things You’ll Never Hear Your Husband Say. These lists are not only funny but also quite perceptive about relationships. She Wants Me (To Go Away), the song between the two top ten lists is fairly obvious in its title and musically reminiscent of the theme songs of early seventies romantic comedies.

The most Canadian tune on this CD is Writing My Name In The Snow and features the miracle of changing wine into water. Another great tune is Hey, Santa Claus, a clean (i.e. lots of honks and sfx) version of the Kevin “Bloody” Wilson Christmas tune. This, as well as Designated Driver were originally aired on the great CBC comedy show Madly Off In All Directions.

The weakness of many a funny song CD that has come across this reviewer’s desk is that the artist does have talent but is musically limited to one musical genre, can only write one kind of funny song, or has many in-jokes only close friends will get. Bowser and Blue have been around for a long time because they have been able to expand creatively so no song is similar to another and no CD is like the previous one. The production values and sound quality are, of course, excellent.

Should you decide to get this great funny song and comedy CD, be aware that it comes in a slim case. The artwork is downloadable on the Bowser and Blue website.
