I was not surprised when Stand Up! Records picked up David Heti’s stand-up comedy indie release It Was Ok.
The label, a personal fave, has a long history of very unique comics like Dylan Brody or Marc Maron. It also has an excellent ear for new talent as its signing of Jamie Kilstein or David Huntsberger shows. David Heti is both unique and new.
If the Dark Side has a comedy club, David Heti is the headliner. The Holocaust, slavery, pedophilia, or how many penises God can fit in his mouth are just a few of the premises here. Punchlines include jovial things like dead babies and fetuses.
Heti is also a very, very smart comic. It Was OK features a masturbation joke wrapped around Nietzche’s multiple recurrences as well as references to St. Augustine and Anselm of Canterbury.
Just when you’ve thought you’ve heard it all there’s David Heti.
If you are wondering, the Stand Up! Records version of this album features better sound than the indie release version but I can’t quite put my finger on how.
