The Best of Abbott and Costello, Volume Three is all the creature feature comedy films Abbott and Costello did in the late forties and early fifties after their career started lagging. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff, Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man, are three of the very best funny comedy movies the duo ever made.
Universal has done quite a job of remastering the original prints so this dvd version looks very much like a perfect print of each movie. Everything has been cleaned up so there are no glitches anywhere on the screen. It is a shame the same could not be said about the very few extras on this dvd set.
Although The Best of Abbott and Costello, Volume Three is very reasonably priced, especially for an 8 comedy box set, you have to think Universal is a bit cheap when it releases these movies on those double-sided dvds that can only get dirty and fingerprinted on one side. I mean, how much does a dvd cost a studio when I can buy blank dvds for about 40 cents each retail and less if I shop around? Still, you have to give Universal Studios credit for not just dumping some lousy print of these classic comedies on dvd and taking the time to restore them.
Like the other volumes in the Abbott and Costello series, Volume Three does contain some duds. Mexican Hayride, Comin’ Round the Mountain, Lost in Alaska may not be the best of the many funny movies Abbott and Costello ever made. You got to remember however that the studio treated this very funny comedy duo like garbage and imposed on them the obligation of a musical number in just about every movie and some dubious costars. Overall, a great buy at a great price, especially for the very funny but not scary creature features in this box set.
