Listening to Jamie Kilstein ’s stand-up comedy CD Libel, Slander & Sedition, is like listening to Jonah Hill’s character from Superbad; he’s filled with pent-up rage, he thinks what he’s saying somehow matters, and while he can be amusing for a bit, after listening to him for a few sentences, you’re hoping Seth Rogen and Bill Hader come in to take over the scene. Their voices are even eerily similar.
Kilstein’s style for most of his album is to talk as fast as possible so that anybody listening can only assume that what he’s saying is funny because they can’t tell that his act is mostly just amateur-night material. Much like many young comedians today, Kilstein clearly idolized David Cross and his sarcastic but incredibly sharp veracity. However, Jamie Kilstein just can’t back it up like Cross can. He rants like a 19-year old who just took his first college philosophy or history class, and has had his eyes opened to the world. Essentially, picture a hippie living today, give him cocaine, and you’d probably end up with this album.
One of the worst parts about his anger and angst is that he’s trying to be an elitist, holier-than-thou kind of guy, then goes on to admit how much of an idiotic screw-up he was/is, and he loses ALL credibility in what he’s saying (also similar to a hippie if you just keep listening).
And whenever Jamie Kilstein decides to slow things down, because he’s either out of breath or running out of material, he always likes to throw in some f-bombs and other shock value words to seduce the audience into laughing while he makes his transition or catches his breath (note, these are not the only times Kilstein resorts to simple shock humor).
Oh, he also enjoys going on rants in the middle of his rants. These are surprisingly generally funny. They have no substance to them, which seems to go against what he’s trying to do, but they are usually funny.
All I can really say is Jamie Kilstein Libel, Slander, & Sedition is a forgettable album that you don’t need to listen to, much less buy.
