Although the last couple of seasons of The Simpsons have been rather banal and new episodes are no longer must see television, The Simpsons, The Complete Seventh Season, shows Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie and the people of Springfield in fine form. The Simpsons Season Seven also has a few classic Simpsons episodes such as Bart Sells His Soul. Much Apu About Nothing, and Summer of 4ft 2.

Of course, one of the highlights of The Simpsons is the Treehouse Of Horror Halloween Special. Season Seven’s Treehouse of Horror features Attack of the 50ft Eyesores, Nightmare On Evergreen Terrace with Groundskeeper Willie as Freddy Krueger, and the brilliant Homer3, the computer animated Tron like segment that ends with a cartoon Homer walking in downtown Los Angeles with real people staring at him. The commentary on Homer3 alone makes this Treehouse of Horror special well worth watching.

There are so many very good episodes on The Simpsons it is difficult to pick out favorites beyond those mentioned before. For those who resist buying The Simpsons on DVD when this great cartoon show is still a staple of syndicated television, remember that the syndicated version is often cut by some 2 or 3 minutes to shove in more ads so the little tags such as what Bart writes on the board and some of the endings are cut.

Newer Simpsons shows seem to feature less and less Itchy & Scratchy cartoons. One of the best, featuring Scratchy coming back as a ghost is, ironically enough, on The Day The Violence Ended, DVD 3 of The Simpsons the Complete Seventh Season. Fans of the Muppets will enjoy the short scene in A Fish Called Selma where Jim Henson’s creatures show up as part of a movie. When asked, “What’s a Muppet?” Homer’s answer is, “Well, it’s not quite a mop and not quite a puppet.”

In terms of special features, The Simpsons The Complete Seventh Season is packed full of goodies. Most episodes feature a deleted scene option where if you click on the scissors that appear on the screen you get a different version of the scene or something left on the cutting room floor. The commentary on each episode is not always brilliant but there are a few gems here and there. The best way to get the best out of the commentary is to switch to that audio track when a special shot is seen (such as Homer’s Don Ameche Oscar on Team Homer.)

The Simpsons Season Seven features guest appearances by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney, Harry Morgan, Paul Anka, Bob Newhart, Kirk Douglas, Mickey Rooney, Glenn Close, Kelsey Grammer as Sideshow Bob, Alex Rocco, Suzanne Sommers, Jeff Goldblum, and Christina Ricci on Summer of 4ft 2.
