With stars like Dirk Benedict, Tanya Roberts, and Charles Nelson Reilly nobody is going to mistake Body Slam for anything other than a B-movie. This DVD which calls itself a rock n roll wrestling comedy is part of the MGM Limited Edition Collection where the studio makes a limited run of its niche audience movies on DVD-R discs. Make no mistake: the print quality and DVD quality are the real thing. Body Slam is a fun and very silly low budget comedy that amuses as much as it confuses.
Benedict (a-Team) plays smooth-talking entrepreneur Harry Smilac. Through a series of sort of explained circumstances and due to a lack of funds Harry becomes an agent in the wrestling world. His main attraction is a face wrestler named Quick Rick Roberts whose niece is played by Kellie Martin. Of course the established managers do not see Harry as a welcome addition to their trade.
He also chases after a beautiful heiress (Tanya Roberts) and tries to avoid a Korean financier and his two goons who make a running joke of destroying whatever fancy car Harry is with. All this while trying to put together a benefit evening for a gubernatorial candidate.
One thing leads to another and Harry puts together a travelling show featuring his one music act and his two wrestlers. This is where the rock and roll comedy tag comes from.
The movie features a few semi famous wrestling celebrities from the eighties including Captain Lou Albano of Cindy Lauper fame.
If the name Hal Needham sounds familiar it is because he was the director for Smokey and the Bandit and its follow-up made for TV movies.
