Despicable Me

You often hear the words “Fun for the whole family” around summer movies but it is frequently just a line and not of any particular substance. Such is not the case with the wonderfully entertaining Despicable Me

In very simple terms the hero of Despicable Me is a very bad man who likes to do very bad things in such a way as to make us laugh even while a voice inside us tells us we probably shouldn’t be laughing. Steve Carell (40 Year Old Virgin, The Office) voices the arch criminal Gru in a heavily accented pastiche of eastern European and Russian accents in a broken but easily understandable English. The voices of the unlikely trio of girls Gru comes to care for are played to perfection by Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly) as Margo, Dana Gaier as Edith and Elsie Fisher as Agnes. (Spoiler alert) The plot line of the movie is relatively simple: Someone has stolen the great pyramid of Giza and it wasn’t Gru. The feeling of being second fiddle accompanies by others pointing out that he is now second fiddle causes Gru to come up with one of the most stunning heists in history to restore his rank as the world’s number one super villain.

Despicable Me is not a great movie but it is very enjoyable and a wonderful way to spend an hour and a half on a hot or rainy day. Believe it or not the movie actually offers some good talking points to parents who are so inclined to go into moral and ethical questions with their young ones. Put this one on the see in the cinema list and if you have little ones pick it up when it comes out on DVD it will get played frequently.
