Dodgeball Unrated ? Blu-ray
Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor
Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber
Fox Home Entertainment 2008
93 minutes
Dodgeball is a sports comedy about … dodgeball. It is formulaic, predictable, not above many bits of crude humor, and entertaining. This is a blu-ray comedy aimed at teen and frat boys and their ilk though adults not obliged to watch family friendly fare will probably enjoy it.
Vince Vaughn plays good guy gym owner Peter La Fleur who is faced with losing everything to arrogant, underhanded, self-centered gym owner White Goodman (Ben Stiller). Toss in love interest and banker Kate (Christine Taylor) and you have a showdown in the making. The showdown is over the national dodgeball championship whose prize money will allow Peter to keep his gym.
For a lowbrow comedy to work, it has to rise above its generic characters and the obligatory crude humor with some original, genuinely funny moments such as the training session with Patches O’Houlihan (Rip Torn). It must also have some surprising and interesting twists. Dodgeball has both, creating a lowbrow comedy that has life and laughs.
Christine Taylor is great as the love interest in this movie and especially lovely in some leather gear. Look for Jason Bateman, David Hasselhoff, Lance Armstrong, Chuck Norris, and William Shatner in some minor roles.
Worthy of putting the subtitles on is the play-by-play commentary during the playoffs.
Dodgeball is a fun lowbrow comedy that spoofs the sports movie genre and amuses at the same time.
Special features on Dodgeball Blu-ray include 3 commentary tracks by Marshall Thurber, Ben Stiller, and Vince Vaughn, deleted and extended scenes, Dodgeball boot camp, a blooper reel, and other stuff.
Other Vince Vaughn comedies include Fred Claus and National Lampoon’s Blackball
