National Lampoon’s Pucked is another basic National Lampoon comedy DVD with a few less breasts that the usual offering. It presents itself as a hockey comedy but in reality it is more about a guy who finances a dream with the dozens of pre-approved credit cards he gets. Pucked is not bad. It could have been better if the latter half of the movie had not turned into a court case and if somebody had directed a bit of energy into this DVD
National Lampoon’s Pucked stars Jon Bon Jovi as Frank Hopper, a former lawyer who gave up his practice to reach his dream, whatever it happens to be at this precise moment. Fresh from the failure of female mall wrestling and armed with a hockey bag full of credit cards he received after misrepresenting his annual salary in a store survey, Frank finances his latest get rich quick scheme: the World Wide Women’s Hockey League
Unlike Frank’s other enterprises, the World Wide Women’s Hockey League and its two startup teams, the Almighty Swans and the Fearsome Foxes, get a good crowd. Unlike many other National Lampoon offerings, Pucked does not denigrate women too much: the players are definitely cute but it looks like they can actually play the game and they are limited to a single nudie locker room scene. Unlike women’s hockey, fights are part of the game. Frank’s scheme catches up to him eventually. He is however willing to go all the way to defend his dream, especially since it works.
Jon Bon Jovi is not the greatest movie star on the planet and brings little energy to what could have been a much more interesting role. Cary Elwes plays the prosecutor as if he is doing the voice over for a disaster movie preview. You kind of wish there had been more hockey and less court case. National Lampoon’s Pucked gives the viewer the feeling he or she is watching the outlines of a movie that did not really get fleshed out.
