The Cable Guy Blu-ray
Jim Carrey, Matthew Broderick
Directed by Ben Stiller
Originally released 1996
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment 2011

If you do not mind Jim Carrey s way over the top acting style The Cable Guy is a fun comedy with a darkish twist. It would have been a much better movie if the main character had been played with more subtlety.  The 15th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray version of The Cable Guy features a new commentary track with Stiller, Carrey, and Judd Apatow and some 59 minutes of new extras.

Broderick plays Steven aka his usual mild-mannered somewhat confused character. Carrey is Chip, the cable guy. The two meet when Steven moves into his new digs after a separation from his girlfriend. The manic Chip slowly inserts himself into Steven’s life and Steven is not too sure at first if that is a good or bad thing.

It is clear Chip is … well … mentally chipped. This slowly becomes apparent. The problem is Carrey is so over the top and the movie so indulgent towards him you do not really believe the threat. Not that the script itself helps much.

The backstory where Ben Stiller plays a guy accused of killing his twin is fun and not overdone.

The Cable Guy features quite a comedy who’s who with Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Janeane Garofalo, David Cross, the horrible and talentless Andy Dick, and a very small part for Kathy Griffin.
