The Campaign

The Campaign starts out as an excellent political satire about a little guy with good intentions going up against a morally bankrupt fourth-term Congressman. It quickly death spirals out of control into a unibrow lowest common denominator comedy where any joke in bad taste finds a home.
The usually dreadful Zack Galifianakis is very good as ordinary citizen Marty Huggins. When four term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) gets into trouble for leaving an explicit phone sex message on a good christian family’s answering machine, Marty gets talked into running against him.
At first the satire is pretty good, Ferrell’s Brady is very close to Bush mark II aside from all the sexual escapades. The guys who get Marty to run for congress are thinly veiled versions of the Motch brothers (Dan Aykroyd and John Lithgow), thinly veiled versions of the Koch brothers whose agenda includes importing Chinese workers to work in their American factories under the same conditions as if they were still in China.
Then the wheels fall off and anything that anyone anywhere on the set found at the bottom of discarded jokes barrels makes it on screen. This includes Cam Brady making a sex tape with Marty’s wife and making it into campaign commercial and Marty using a story Brady wrote in second grade to show he is a communist.
It gets worse after that. The Campaign Blu-ray includes ten extra minutes of worse after that.
