You Don’t Mess With The Zohan
Adam Sandler, John Turturo, Emmanuelle Chiriqui
Directed by Denis Dugan
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
117 minutes

Adam Sandler is known for his particular kind of humor. Usually, you either like it or you don’t. I’ve loved some of his movies like Happy Gilmore, while other movies left me cold. I liked some moments in You Don’t Mess With The Zohan DVD, but I found the story a bit far-fetched, too much so to be funny in fact.

Zohan is an Israeli special force specialist who has the dream of becoming a hair stylist in New York. Although this could have been funny in many ways, the underlying story in You Don’t Mess With the Zohan (Adam Sandler) involving relations between Israelis and Palestinians makes the story branch out in too many unnecessary distractions. However, there are some funny moments in relation with these.

The Hezbollah help phone line part is funny, Zohan’s dinner with his parents where he tells them about his dream is quite hilarious. However, there are too many Fizzy Bubblech and hummus jokes for my taste, and too many “sex with older women” types of situations.

You Don’t Mess With The Zohan is one of those comedies that brings in a few laughs from some situations, while it falls flat in others. It’s good for a few cheap laughs, and the DVD might be worth a rental if you like immature sexual innuendos, as well as racial and cultural clichés pushed almost beyond the acceptable.
