You Will Met a Tall Dark Stranger
Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts, Gemma Jones
Directed by Woody Allen
Sony Pictures Classics 2011
98 minutes

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger is not your usual Woody Allen romantic comedy DVD. Then again, what is. First and foremost this movie starring Anthony Hopkins, Gemma Jones, Antinio Banderas, and Naomi Watts is set in London. This allows for a less neurotic and lighter comedy DVD. Blu-ray at Amazon

Alfie and Helena (Hopkins and Jones) have split up after some forty years. Alfie is trying to get a second crack at life with an, ahem, actress. Helena is a overly dramatic emotional mess. Their daughter Sally is living with Roy, an author with one published book who after a long dry spell has just finished his second. Sally gets a job with a very suave art gallery owner (Banderas) while Roy becomes infatuated with the woman across the alley (Freida Pinto).

This may sound confusing but Woody Allen adroitly juggles all the stories very nicely. This is in part because he uses Helena as a center.

What does not quite work is the omniscient narrator. Allen relies a bit too much on him to tell and not show. Also, Naomi Watts s performance in the confrontation is really off.

This being a Woody Allen comedy you know they will not live happily ever after. The way the wheels come off here is quite fun.

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger may not become one of the director s classics but it is very enjoyable.

Look for Pauline Collins (Shirley Valentine) as Helena s spiritual advisor. There is a continuity glitch with Hopkins black eye. There are no special features on the DVD or Blu-Ray

Stand-up Comic Allen's early years. Excellent CD and a must for his fans
