In ye olden days, Andy Hardy and the gang would goeth in someone’s barn and put on a show. Now, Zack and Miri Make a Porno in a 2 DVD set. This comedy starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks is original and funny. It is, surprisingly in my case, not as dumb as the premise might make it out to be.
Believe it or not, this Kevin Smith DVD is a romantic comedy; a very strange romantic comedy but a romantic comedy nonetheless. If you think this is a spoiler; you do not have any clue about the movies: it is obvious from the get go.
Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) have been friends since grade school and share an apartment. Making ends meet is difficult as they are both in dead-end jobs and dead-enders with their water and electricity cut off. They start thinking they can solve all their financial problems by making a porno. Why? “Because other people have options, and dignity, which we do not have.”
Both Rogen and Banks are excellent and believable in this movie. You really get the feeling their characters have been friends since grade school. The supporting cast is also quite good. Look for the odd bit of nudity.
Yes, Zack and Miri is has lowbrow humor with lots of foul language. Yes, this comedy is episodic with bits and pieces writer director Kevin Smith included just because he felt like it and it was a good gag (the goalie joke for example). Yes, that is stand-up comic Jim Norton as the first guy to audition for Zack and Miri’s movie.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a fun, very enjoyable, original comedy.
P.S. I would have called it Hairy Met Salty
There is no director’s commentary or cast commentary track. Guess they are saving that for the super duper extra different memorial uncensored anniversary gold platinum Xth anniversary commemorative unrated uncut (pun!!!) edition or something.
There are lots of extras though; there’s even a second DVD to hold them all. Zack and Miri Make a Porno DVD 1 contains a dozen or so deleted scenes. DVD 2 includes a making of, Money Show Webisodes, Comic-con 2008, Outtakes with ad-libs and bloopers, and Seth vs Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy.
