Back From Hell A Tribute to Sam Kinison
Sam Kinison, Kathy Griffin, et al
Comedy Central 2010
60 minutes plus extras
Sam Kinison Back From Hell is an A&E Biography with roid rage. It is also parts of Breaking the Rules, his 1987 stand-up comedy show. This Comedy Central DVD is certain to make Kinison some new fans and pretty much confirms what fans of the lat comic already knew: the man was an original and a talent. You will want to turn the volume down a notch or two for this DVD.
The set-up for Back From Hell is a few semi famous comics take the Comedy Store stage and tell their Kinison tribute story. This set-up is shoved aside very early on and instead you get clips from various Kinison performances and famous comics saying nice, recorded things about the loudest stand-up comic, ever. None of the commentary rises above the he was a great guy, he was a strange guy, he really changed the comedy world and so on. Oddly enough these trite comments make their way trough and you start seeing why Kinison was such a force.
The clips themselves do most of the talking -or is it yelling. Some of the clips are from low quality VHS footage and home made movies.
The commentary comes from Denis Leary, Chris Rock, Lewis Black, Norm MacDonald, Kathy Griffin, Marc Maron, and a whole bunch of other comics and a very out of place and not particularly observant Jay Leno. Leno comes across as a six-year-old trying to explain adult words.
Bonus features include stories from The Comedy Store in Los Angeles with comedians Pauly Shore, Marc Maron among others; a Live “Wild Thing” performance and the original music video of the song; and additional classic Kinison stand-up.
