Garrison Keillor – A Prairie Home Companion – Duets

If you enjoy the variety of music on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion you certainly will enjoy this 18 song CD.

Duets features a variety of musical styles and a who’s who of American music with the occasional contribution of the man from Lake Wobegon.

All of the tracks here were recorded during the Minnesota Public Radio show but the sound is as crisp as a studio recording. This is especially important when the songs feature a classical guitar: Chet Atkins almost sounds like it is in your living room. In fact, the audience applause at the end of the songs is a bit jarring.

Fans of country, blues, and traditional music would be hard put to come up with a better and more varied collection than A Prairie Home Companion Duets. Anybody who is somebody is on this CD: Chet Atkins, Leo Kottke, The Everly Brothers, Dan Chouinard, Walter Bobbie, Renee Fleming, and even Meryl Streep and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits fame. Those who have listened to A Prairie Home Companion in recent years know that Garrison Keillor‘s singing voice sure ain’t what it used to be. Fortunately, he is in fine form on Duets.

I am not enough of a musicologist to identify all the genres featured on this 18 song disc. I am certain however that as long as it ain’t rock n’ roll it is featured here including some opera with Renee Fleming.

In terms of personal favorite and least favorite. The former is Autumn Leaves and the latter is Next Time I’m In Town.

The one weak point about this American songbook CD is the opening of Banks of Marble where a second of applause is heard at the beginning for no reason.  check out our Garrison Keillor download page
