Gladys Hardy – I Love Jesus But I Drink A Little

I found myself enjoying Gladys Hardy I Love Jesus, But I Drink A Little even if it features the two things I most dislike on a comedy CD: morning radio hosts and funny phone calls.

You have probably heard Ellen DeGeneres call Gladys Hardy and ask her how things are going. Gladys also gets on a few radio morning shows and makes a few strange phone calls. Though it seems this little old lady is real –I have my doubts– she will remind many of Jonathan Winters’ Maudie Frickert.

I dislike telephone recorded comedy of any kind. The sound sucks and ninety-nine percent of the time it is not funny and too long. This CD does not solve the first problem but manages to avoid problems two and three. Not all of these tracks work, the “Delter” airline and the Diner for example are a skip, but most will put a smile or two on your face.

Also, I am really not a fan of morning radio comedy. The stuff is way too local and one of the two hosts has the sense of humor of a hammer and the timing of a sloth. This is the case for Dale and Bob at KLBJ but Gladys Hardy rises above their circumstance to create a few laughs with her commentaries.

Gladys calling some companies’ automated information systems is neat. Loop de Loop is one of the best of the genre. The computer on this one, Northwest Airlines, really helps make the material on this one. The second part is okay

The commentaries and the family clips that are also entertaining moments on I Love Jesus But I Drink A Little. The commentaries are a little uneven, the Winter Olympics takes a weird detour, but overall they are fun. Awareness, a comment on Restless Leg Syndrome or RLS and other Madison Avenue made up diseases, and awareness of something week.

If you like morning radio and telephone call comedy, this comedy CD is superior to most.
