Lately there have been a lot of stand-up comedy releases from comics who have a day job. Few of those are particularly interesting. Chad Anderson and Live At Wee Johnny’s is the comedy download that proves to be the exception to this.
Chad Anderson is a very enjoyable and original comic and Live at Wee Johnny’s is worth whatever Amazon is asking for it though to date it is mislabeled as Live From Wee Johnny.
Chad Anderson is a First Nations Canadian comic. Part of the originality of this stand-up download comes from the material related to this. Taped in Winnipeg, Canada, Anderson sets the tone almost immediately by setting up his audience by announcing he is indigenous and uses the silence that ensues to issue the warning “buckle-up, white devils”. Oddly enough, instead of making the situation tense it normalizes it.
As is the overwhelming tendency these days, Chad Anderson Live At Wee Johnny’s features very biographical material. Some of it is relationship based, some of it is based on Anderson’s roots. I found the latter more interesting, especially the bits about going back home to The Pas and being used for his background
A particularly original track is Metal Fonts on how heavy metal band logos seem to be limited to three not very distinct fonts.
The funniest moments on this stand-up comedy download are My Dad Died and Have a Good Cry. They feature just the right mix of pathos and absurd.
There are a couple of very local references on this stand-up comedy download that will go over the head of anyone not from Winnipeg. It takes nothing away from enjoying Chad Anderson Live At Wee Johnny’s
