A guy’s guide to watching the Bride Wars DVD: Do not comment on how reasonable the grooms to be are in this bride war comedy. Do not point this comedy is not a docudrama. Do not ever, ever react during the bridal shower scene. Do not take sides, each bride being one side of your girlfriend’s personality. Just pretend you are the groom on the wedding cake while watching this ultimate chick flick and comedy. Do not laugh at anything the brides do; just nod your head as if you understand.
Best friends Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) have always dreamt of a June wedding at the Plaza Hotel. When their boyfriends propose … well, when one boyfriend proposes … at pretty much the same time, the girls go to wedding planner extraordinaire Marion St. Claire and book their dream date. Unfortunately there is a hitch and the girls become bitter rivals as they fight over who will get the only available big day and who will have to change the date of her wedding.
Though there are a few very plot holes in Bride Wars such as Liv the killer litigation lawyer not suing the wedding planner this is a pretty enjoyable comedy. The movie really picks up when strong-willed (bitchy) Liv and accommodating (pushover) Emma start trying to sabotage each other’s wedding plans. Things get really emotional (nuts).
It does take a bit too long for the conflict to begin and its escalation is also too slow. The dance off scene is too long. Candice Bergen is very much underused as Marion St. Claire: anybody else could have played that role. Still, this comedy about a bride war between two childhood friends is pleasant enough.
There are a few interesting and original twists and turns in Bride Wars. All in all though you get the feeling it should have been tighter and a bit more over the top.
