Some Like It Hot is a classic Billy Wilder comedy with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marylin Monroe. It was voted Best American Comedy by the American Film Institute. Some Like It Hot Blu-ray features a crisp print in 1:85:1 widescreen. Traditionalists will be annoyed with the fact the sound is only available in 5.1 Dolby and not the original mono. It is in this movie Monroe sings I Want to be Loved By You (as well as I m Through With Love and Running Wild).
Curtis and Lemmon play two musicians who witness the St. Valentine s Day Massacre and join an all-girls band to get out of town. Sugar Kane (Monroe) is one of the musicians and the object of Jerry / Daphne s amorous interest. The genius of the script is Wilder keeps mixing up the cards so Joe (Curtis) is the ladies man and Jerry (Lemon) the stick in the mud but Josephine (Curtis) is a prude compared to Daphne (Lemon) but though Daphne / Jerry has the hots for Sugar it is faux millionaire Junior (Curtis playing Cary Grant) who is successful courting her while Daphne has to fend off a real millionaire. Confused? Never: Wilder keeps everything rolling along very smoothly.
There are many classic comedy lines and scenes in Some Like It Hot. A favorite is the Party in Berth 7 which is the train version of the shipboard stateroom scene in the Marx Brothers A Night at the Opera.
Special features on Some Like It Hot Blu-ray are an odd commentary track featuring comedy writers Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz for some reason with clips from interviews with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon tossed in here and there (also available in the subtitles); a 25 minute Making Of with archival clips; The Legacy of Some Like It Hot (20 minutes); Leonard Maltin talks to Tony Curtis in the half hour Nostalgic Look Back; a 12-minute feature with the girls in the band, and a stills and clip gallery that is impossible to navigate.
