The only reason to get the Caddyshack Blu-ray version is you are a hard core fan and want to see the two special features: Caddyshack, the 19th Hole and Caddyshack the Inside Story, an 80 minute documentary about the making of this golf comedy. These special features were included in the HD DVD version Warner Brothers first released. The HD DVD version also had outtakes not included here.
Both Caddyshack the 19th hole and The Inside Story are very interesting and reveal a lot about this Harold Ramis movie. The Inside Story has a few moments where the sound and picture are not synchronized.
Caddyshack is basically a sketch comedy loosely tied together by a golf club setting. Ted Knight plays the club president, Rodney Dangerfield plays a rich rube who annoys the fancy folks at the club, Chevy Chase plays a golfer with a zen approach, and Michael O’Keefe plays caddy Danny Noonan, the central character in this comedy. The movie ends with the main characters having a not so friendly golf tournament.
This Harold Ramis comedy certainly has its moments. Some of the best are when Bill Murray plays golf with marigolds and when he sets charges to get rid of the gopher. Rodney Dangerfield also shines here. The most famous are the caddy water ballet and the Baby Ruth in the pool.
Chevy Chase is pretty decent but his scene with Bill Murray is one of the low points of the movie. Ted Knight is good but there is a bit too much Ted Baxter of the Mary Tyler Moore show in his character.
All in all, Caddyshack is a good golf comedy where everybody except Rodney Dangerfield gets upstaged by a mechanical gopher.
National Lampon’s Blackball – Vince Vaughn Lawn Bowling comedy, better than average for Lampoon movies.
