Get smart get the Get Smart Season One DVD box set. Very few situation comedies are still funny 40 years later. Get Smart is. The shows are still fun to watch and look absolutely pristine. Purists will be happy to learn the opening teaser and the closer are intact: the 30 episodes on the 4 discs of this sitcom DVD set are not the syndicated TV versions. The set also includes the black and white pilot.

I was unaware Get Smart was created by Mel Brooks but it immediately makes sense if you look at the tone and the gags of this sixties situation comedy. Perhaps some of the gags got tired by season 5 but in season one of the show all the jokes, be they visual, verbal, situational, or physical, work. The dog, Fang aka agent K 13, on the other hand, does not.

Especially good in Get Smart Season One is the toy store episode, Our Man In Toyland (DVD 1). As Maxwell Smart says, “After all, we had at our disposal every fiendish and destructive plaything every devised for the pleasure of little children. Those poor devils, all they had was real guns and bullets.” Oddly, this episode is also prescient of the Furby problem the CIA encountered a few years back.

Of course, logic takes the occasional holiday in Get Smart. Back to the Old Drawing Board, DVD 3 of Get Smart Season One, has KAOS using a life-like robot, Hymie (played by Dick Gautier) to kidnap a scientist who is inventing a dog-like lunar rover. This is not the best episode here but it does feature some very funny visual comedy.

Of the 30 episodes of Get Smart Season One, Dear Diary is really fun. Max spends some time at the spy retirement home and meets Agent 4, the man he patterned himself after. Old spies are sometimes better than young ones.

This is a great situation comedy DVD set. Get Smart was a classic and it still is.
