Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s Volume 1 is not as interesting as the 1960s DVD set though this could be a generational thing. It is still fun if you are a cartoon fan but it features very few classics. Then again there were not that many great cartoons in the 1970s. This 2 DVD set features 12 shows on 2 discs for a total of 17 cartoons.
There is a title card notice at the beginning about how the cartoons are not pristine and so on. This is not really a problem aside from the theme sequences to some cartoons. Unless you are a serious and picky cartoon aficionado, the odd specks here and there on some shows will not bother you.
Saturday Morning Cartoons 70s Volume 1 DVD 1 features a Jetsons episode, The Batman and Tarzan Adventure Hour, 2 cartoons from Hong Kong Phooey, one from Goober and the Ghost Chasers, a Speed Buggy episode, and three Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch cartoons.
This cartoon DVD also includes one of the dumbest cartoons in creation, The New Adventures of Batman. This is not only because of the presence of Bat Mite, an annoying creature obviously there for the really young viewers but also because many of the shots in this cartoon were obviously meant to be recycled from cartoon to cartoon. Even the Joker comes out badly here. This is a Filmation production as is the Tarzan Lord of the Jungle cartoon.
The second Warner Brothers Cartoon Collection 70s DVD features a fun Josie and the Pussycats (supposedly In Outer Space) episode. Isn’t it trange how Alexander in this cartoon sounds exactly like Casey Kasem aka Shaggy in Scooby Doo? I had no idea whatsoever Charlie’s Angel Cheryl Ladd voiced Melody although here she is voiced by someone else. Also included is an episode from the hour-long New Scooby Doo Movies where the gang meets the Globetrotters (repackaged cartoons anyone?), a Yogi’s Gang, a episode from Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan, and Roman Holidays.
It is probably a question of when you grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, but I preferred the 1960s Volume 1 DVD set.
