Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s Volume 2
Hair Bear Bunch, New Adventures of Gilligan, Shazzan
Yogi?s Gang, Valley of the Dinosaurs, More
2 DVD 12 Cartoon Shows
Warner Home Entertainment 2009
Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s Volume 2 is superior to Volume 1. Not that you can really complain about a 2 DVD set featuring 12 different cartoons shows and about 20 different impossible to find elsewhere cartoons. Warner Brothers warns the viewer in the opening to Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s Volume 2 that these cartoons are not pristine. Fair enough, most are basically VHS quality.
Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s Volume Two includes Yogi’s Gang, a half hour show where Yogi and various Hanna Barbera second bananas go around in a flying ark. Here they encounter the evil Mr. Bigot whose ray makes people bigots.
The New Adventures of Gilligan’s Island is a very very low budget Filmation (aka lousy) production. This stilted cartoon is even too cheap to use the theme song. The Hair Bear Bunch is a mid-seventies Hanna Barbera creation about three bears who spend a lot of time escaping from it and outwitting zookeeper Peevly and his assistant Botch This is a really fun show.
DVD 1 also features an episode of Sealab 2020. This is a good, original, and informative half hour cartoon. In Shazzan two kids find a ring that sends them to early days Arabia where they must return the right to its rightful owner with the help of a genie. The two short episodes here are on the lame side. The opening sequence to Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan looks pretty rough but the cartoon itself, a crime solving sort of one hit Partridge Family is in good shape and is pretty good.
Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s Volume 2 DVD 2 also features The Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour. The opening credits and Road Runner credits are rough but the cartoons are great including a not often seen winter version of Duck! Rabbit! Duck! The show also includes a Pepe le Pew and a Marvin the Martian (way cool!). I still wonder why they could not use the better prints from the Looney Tunes collections. The Tom And Jerry Grape Ape Show has 3 Tom and Jerry and 2 Grape Ape Cartoons.
The blast from the past certainly has to be The Banana Splits Adventure Hour. The mascots introduce The Arabian Knights, a cartoon that really shows its age and seems to be the pilot episode, an episode of Danger Island which is a live action adventure episodic show, and The Three Musketeers.
Also on DVD 2 are Inch High Private Eye, a fun adventure half-hour cartoon. The New Adventures of Batman and Robin (with the dreadful Bat Mite) has the dynamic duo fighting a candy villain. This Filmation product is decent enough.
Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s Volume 2 is a great trip down sugary cereal induced memory lane. If you grew up back then or know someone who did, this makes for a great gift idea.
The Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s special feature is a short feature on Shazzan on DVD 1
