New In Town is a fish-out-of-water romantic comedy DVD starring Rene Zellwegger and Harry Connick Jr. The movie is somewhat formulaic but not enough to make you lose interest. Yes, it is heavy on character types and fairly predictable but New In Town makes for a nice evening’s viewing and sometimes that’s all you want.
Zellweger plays Lucy Hill,a young Miami executive sent to a small Minnesota town to downsize it and modernize it. The warm folks of New Ulm and the 30 below weather are a bit much for Lucy. The folksy folks grow on her and so does union rep Ted Mitchell (Harry Connick Jr.) By some coincidence, Lucy quickly reveals her blue collar background so you know whose side she is going to take when corporate decides to close the plant.
New In Town has little if anything new. It is the story, characters, and especially Zellweger that keep you interested. This romantic comedy does sometimes go for the odd Mee-ni-soh-tah cliché but not often enough to become annoying.
Of course, this movie has the kind of ending never seen in corporate America, especially since the Bush administration aftermath.
This romantic comedy DVD is fun enough and quite entertaining.Special features include deleted scenes and they include a scene shown in the previews for New In Town but unfortunately now shown in the movie: the scene where Lucy’s car becomes a bowling ball and ice fishing houses so many pins. You really have to wonder why director Jonas Elmer cut out one of the funniest moments in his movie.
