Warner Home Entertainment 2010
125 minutes

If you expect more than fluff from a romantic comedy Blu-ray titled Valentine’s Day,  warnings like “Do not use hair dryer in the shower” are meant for you. Valentines’s Day is directed by Garry Marshall who is best known for The Princess Diaries and lots of TV sitcoms like Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. This is its weakness: this romcom does not rise above average sitcom level. This makes for an entertaining enough but forgettable movie.

Valentine’s Day is a series of connected story vignettes all taking place on February 14th. The center of the movie is a florist named Reed (Kutcher) who just proposed to his girlfriend and his best girl pal Julia (Jennifer Garner) who decides to surprise her boyfriend on this most romantic day.

Stories include a mail room guy in love with a secretary (Anne Hathaway) who also works a sex hotline, a high school couple planning their first time, a young boy  ordering flowers for his girlfriend in grade school, a soldier flying home on a 24-hour pass, a reporter doing street interviews about what Valentine’s Day is,

The real interest in this romcom Blu-ray is the many famous actors playing bit parts. They include Julia Roberts, Kathy Bates, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, George Lopez, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Shirley MacLaine, and so on and so on.

There is too much going on in Valentine’s Day to engage the audience. You end up drifting in and out depending on which actor or character you like best and which story you sort of care about.

Valentine’s Day best moments are those that are more cynical about love. Unfortunately, these get lost in the syrupy mushy stuff. It also has a few surprise twists but they only start showing up more than halfway through.

Special features for this romcom are bloopers, deleted scenes, the Stars Convess The Valentine’s Day Stories, The Garry Factor, a music video with Jewel, and an inane director’s commentary track
