Vibes is a hell of a lot of fun. This odd and overlooked adventure / romantic comedy stars Cyndi Lauper, Jeff Goldblum, and Peter Falk. It is one of five recent additions to the Sony Pictures Martini Movies collection; a packaging gimmick, but a really cool packaging gimmick. Each DVD label features a different martini recipe, and each release also has another martini recipe in the extra features as well as a couple of humoristic shorts that basically plug the other movies in the collection but still manage to amuse. Such is the case for the Vibes DVD.
In Vibes, directed by He’s Not Just That Into You’ Ken Kwapis, Cyndi Lauper plays psychic future hairdresser Sylvia Pickel who, along with archeologist Jeff Goldblum whose psychic talent is psychometry (figuring things out by touching an object), are hired by Harry Buscafusco (Peter Falk) to go to Ecuador and find his son –or so he says. Peter Falk has a lot of fun with the Buscafusco character. Hell, everybody in this movie seems to be having fun.
It turns out everybody is out looking for some lost Inca city and its secret.
Vibes was written by Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz (Parenthood, Night Shift, City Slickers, A League of Their Own) so you know it is original and funny. A lot of the comedy here comes not only from the characters but also from the very clever and off-beat dialogue, “Not all gangs are bad. Take Our Gang: Alfalfa….”

My favorite martini recipe in this batch of Martini Movies is the Lava Lamp Martini on the comedy Getting Straight ‘s DVD:

1 part raspberry liqueur
