Mike & Molly belongs to a rare breed: the romantic situation comedy. This is a show that wears its heart on its sleeve. It is also a show that makes its many, many fat jokes funny because there is an honesty to the characters saying them. That in itself may not be enough for some and it gets a bit stale but trying Mike & Molly is liking it. This sitcom DVD set features 24 shows on 3 discs or 2 Blu-ray discs.

Mike is a big guy and a Chicago police officer. Molly (Melissa McCarthy, 2011 Emmy) is a big girl and a school teacher. They run into each other at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting and appreciate the other’s sense of humor.

One of the many fun things about this sitcom is it starts from scratch. Mike and Molly are complete strangers in the pilot episode and their relationship grows slowly through the rest of the season. It is also fun to see that neither character is perfect: Molly gets loopy on their first date and things do not go very well for Mike on their second.

The supporting cast is generally very good. Reno Wilson is very good as Mike’s partner Carl. Their scenes in the car are some of the funniest moments in the show. They also drop by a diner where Samuel (Nyambi Nyambi) works and exchanges quips. Swoosie Kurtz is good as Molly’s mother.  Carl’s grandmother is also fun.

One weak element in Mike & Molly is Molly’s sister, a pretty girl drama queen named Victoria (Katy Mixon). That character is just irritating and the storyline of the mother favoring her cuter child gets old real fast.

Look for William Sanderson (Larry of Darryl, and Darryl and Newhart fame) at the end of season one.
