CLICK PIC FOR CLIP I very wrongly assumed Tiny Toon was just a cheap knock off of the Warner Brothers classic characters made to fill in some space between Saturday morning commercials. The 4 DVD Tiny Toon Adventures Season 1 Volume 1 is a rich collection of 35 great cartoons both kids and adults can enjoy.

This first Tiny Toon DVD set features some very original cartoons, great animation, and smart writing. Strangely enough, Tiny Toon Adventures feature the same cartoon level violence that was deleted from the TV version of the original Warner Brother cartoons. Go figure.

Some cartoons in this 4 DVD 35 episode set  are 24 minutes long. Most like The Wheel o Comedy or the Halloween show Stuff That Goes Bump In The Night feature 3 shorter cartoons. Classic Looney Tunes characters show up from time to time as teachers at Loony University. These include Sylvester, Daffy Duck, and Foghorn Leghorn. Other minor characters have cameos here and there.

To make Tiny Toon cartoons interesting for the whole family there are many references only parents will get. Citizen Max (DVD 2) has many Citizen Kane references including a classic black and white opening and many shot for shot matches. There’s also a nod included to WKRP in Cincinnati.

A Quack in the Quarks, is a great spoof of George Lucas’ Star Wars -with a really funny explanation of why they are called Storm Troopers. If you watch closely you will find many other science fiction and movie references: Rosebud, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Tintin, Doctor Who, and more.

There are also backdrop and visual gags or film references adults will enjoy and that kids will not really get -such as Porky reading Porks Illustrated or an echo of the shower scene in Psycho. A personal fave is Montana Max’ store: Toys Are Mine.

Tiny Toon Special Features are on side 2 of DVD 4 and is a look at the origins of this cartoon.
