A Prairie Home Companion Commercial Radio: Words From Our So-Called Sponsors is a great compilation comedy CD of the very best of the fake but very funny commercials aired on A Prairie Home Companion between 1997 and 2004.

Having been a longtime listener of this public radio show, I am impressed by how many personal past favorites are on this Garrison Keillor CD.

Putting together Commercial Radio: Words From Our So-Called Sponsors must have been a Herculean task. There were so many great funny commercials to choose from but somebody somehow managed to get an example of each of the fake ads that allow Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion to switch from a musical number to a story or a comedy bit. Personal favorite here is Professional Association Of English Majors where Keillor and crew show how an English degree can help any married man answer the dreaded question “Notice anything different?”  Fans of Seinfeld will definitely have fun trying to figure out who came up with the idea of the date who eats flies when they listen to Beebopareebop Rhubarb Pie.

A lot of the commercials on this Commercial Radio (mp3 download at Amazon) compilation poke fun at the people of Minnesota. One of the best of these tracks is Guy’s Shoes where the shoes not only make the man but the Minnesotan. Also very funny are the two Earl’s Academy Of Accents funny commercials where Earl can teach you to replace your Lake Wobegon accent with something more appropriate to your aspirations like a southern or French accent and, if such is your need, replace your harsh NewYawk accent with a nice soft accent from Virginia.

Rednecks will definitely go to the local hardware store and get some duct tape after hearing the American Duct Tape Council ad for duct tape as a cheaper solution to face lift plastic surgery. Of course, no Prairie Home Companion CD compilation would be complete without at least one Bertha’s Kitty Boutique commercial. As a matter of fact, I would not be surprised if a CD of just Bertha’s Kitty Boutique ads would not be a popular gift for the many single women with more than one cat.

Some of the products or offers on A Prairie Home Companion Commercial Radio are definitely bizarre and worthy of a shopping channel. Such is the case for the funny commercial for Minnesota Diminishment Clinic that can take a 6’3 man and make him of average height. The no-nonsense approach of the Lundberg Counseling Agency is perhaps something that should be applied to real life cases.

Some of these funny commercials are also rather spooky such as Genetic Engineering and Virtual Fishing. Of course there are a few barbs at Lutherans that fans of Garrison Keillor’s News From Lake Wobegon will be familiar with. This is the case for the American Pharmaceuticals ad and testimony given by a Lutheran pastor.

Not that Commercial Radio: Words From Our So-Called Sponsors is flawless. I am still trying to figure out what the Frisco Town song is doing on this comedy CD while some of the sound on Fred Farrel Animal Calls featuring Elvis lures does not allow the listener to really get the joke. Fortunately, these are but two tracks on a 30-track comedy CD that is definitely worth your while.
