Dave belongs in any serious comedy collection. Even more so if you are a fan of political comedies. This movie starring Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Frank Longoria, Ving Rhames, and Kevin Dunn isĀ  a very funny and entertaining take on American politics. Now available on Blu-ray, Dave manages to always balance funny and thought provoking.

Kline plays Dave Kovic. Dave runs a small town temp agency and moonlights as a celebrity lookalike of President Bill Mitchell. This gets the attention of President Mitchell’s entourage and they hire Dave to be his double. Things rapidly get out of hand when Mitchell, who has a Kennedy or Clinton like libido, has an aneurysm in flagrante delicto. Mitchell’s aides, the sinister Bob Alexander and speechwriter Allan Reed, convince Dave it is his patriotic duty to keep up the charade. Of course, Alexander and Reed have a hidden agenda.

Wide-eyed Dave goes along at first and then starts taking the job seriously. When challenged, he asks his accountant to help balance the national budget. Dave and Mrs Mitchell eventually hit it off, there are some dark machinations, and eventually….

The performances here are all solid. There is no laugh out loud moment in this comedy but there is always something entertaining and funny going on. Dave is a movie that always hits the spot on a rainy Sunday.
