Drop Dead Sexy
Jason Lee, Crispin Glover, Melissa Keller
Directed by Michael Philip
VVS Films 2006
90 minutes

Drop Dead Sexy is a very funny comedy DVD and sort of Weekend at Bernie’s meets Raising Arizona. It stars Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl) as Frank and Crispin Glover (Charlie’s Angels and other creepy roles) as two buddies who take on a job for a gangster (Spider, Pruitt Taylor Vince) and then literally try to dig up the money they owe him after their truck blows up with its illegal cargo.

Eddie (Crispin Glover) is a grave digger (subterranean architect) and basically does everything Frank tells him to do. He digs up a local heiress’ grave to steal her jewelry and pay back Spider. Of course, things do not go as plan and they soon find themselves saddled with the body of Crystal Harkness who really is Drop Dead Sexy. This comedy DVD works because the movie does not assume the viewer is an idiot. It never belabors a point, telegraphs a joke, repeat a funny bit in case you missed it and can’t find the rewind button, and has quite a few moments you have to watch carefully and listen to carefully if you are going to get all of the humor in this comedy. Both Crispin Glover and Jason Lee have some very good lines and moments when they are alone on the screen and allowed to steal the movie.

Another strong point in favor of Drop Dead Sexy is it knows what the viewers are expecting, –such as the scene where Crystal’s hand falls over Eddie’s body while he is in bed-from bits in Weekend At Bernie’s but immediately turns the tables on their expectations while adding flashbacks and dream sequences to really spice things up. Frank and Eddie not only have to figure out what to do with Crystal Harkness’ body (Melissa Keller) but figure out exactly how she died before they try to blackmail her grieving husband.

This dark, comic movie proves you can do a film about two bumbling idiots without doing a movie written in crayon by idiots, for idiots, and with idiot actors. Not that Drop Dead Sexy is one of those comedies for brainiacs with subtle art house humor, it has all the laughs you expect and want from a nice light comedy with a bit of a dark twist or two. Writers Paul Doiron and John Paul Benjamin Smith know a good line when they see one, can slip in a few very good sexual innuendos, and really, really know how to put a few dark and very funny new twists to an already bizarre plot line.

Drop Dead Sexy is a really funny comedy DVD and, for this comedy fan with quite a few DVDs in his library already, a keeper.
