Our Idiot Brother
Paul Rudd, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer
Directed by Jesse Peretz
Anchor Bay Entertainment 2011
90 minutes

Our Idiot Brother is an enjoyable comedy that keeps suggesting it could have been better. The story is fun if not quite original. The performances are there, especially Paul Rudd and Zooey Deschanel. The thing is Ned is a bit too much of the last of the hippy flower children idealist innocents to be believable. Our Idiot Brother is the kind of comedy DVD you enjoy once but do not wish to revisit.

Ned (Paul Rudd) sells pot to a uniformed policeman (something the movie mentions quite a few times to make sure you get the character) and goes to jail. Once released, he finds himself kicked off his back to nature patch and having to crash with one of his sisters. One if a housewife married to a filmmaker (Steve Coogan of Alan Partridge fame), one is a somewhat bisexual stand-up comic living with a dozen other people (Zooey Deschanel), and one is a magazine writer.

Of course Ned’s presence changes their lives in some way. This builds up slowly until the end of the movie when the three sisters commiserate about the effect Ned had on them.

The ending is a fun surprise.

Special features on the Our Idiot Brother DVD are director’s commentary, deleted scenes, a very different alternate ending, and a making of.
