Please Don’t Eat the Daisies is one of the four movies in the Doris Day Turner Classic Movies Greatest Legends collection. Day fans who already have this particular title will see it is the exact same DVD. The other titles are Calamity Jane (1953), Love Me or Leave Me (1955), and Romance on the High Seas (1948). Please Don’t Eat the Daisies (1960) is a personal favorite comedy though it suffers from a rushed and very abrupt ending.
Doris Day plays Kate Mackay, a mother of four married to a professor who has just become one of the major theater critics in New York. He has just unfavorably reviewed his friend’s play. The Mackays are also planning a move to the country, a taxi driver wants the critic to read his play, and Day has to survive the move, her four sons, her husband’s growing ego, and, later, compete with an actress out to steal her man.
The comedy here comes from situations like mother with four very active boys, city folks moving to the country, critic getting a bit full of himself, recipients of critiques being peeved, and theater people. It also comes from secondary characters like the lady who is going to rent the Mackay’s apartment and some situations in the new house.
The theater critic eventually gets his comeuppance and is ego deflated.
The title song is banal is artificially plugged in. There are a couple of inside references including a bar of Que Sera Sera and Mrs Mackay saying she spent the afternoon with Rock Hudson (with whom Day made Pillow Talk the year before).
Look for Richard Haydn (Max in The Sound of Music) in an important supporting role.
