The Big Bang Theory Season 2
Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco,
Studio: Warner
DVD Release Date: September 15, 2009
Pure and simple would be the best words to describe the best situation comedy on television: The Big Bang Theory. In its sophomore year The Big Bang Theory managed to show that the writers and actors both had the chops to keep it funny. Naturally enough the first step to keeping it funny was keeping the cast together. Back to reprise their roles are Johnny Galecki (Leonard), Jim Parsons (Sheldon), Kaley Cuoco (Penny), Simon Helberg (Howard) and Kunal Nayyar (Rajesh). Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre are back as the executive producers and frequently writers of the series.
The Big Bang Theory has matured to the point where Penny is a much more integrated character in the storyline than she was in the first season. Penny is the diametric opposite of Sheldon and between the two of them they keep the wheels on this five person ensemble. Kaley Cuoco sums it up best in the extras section “Testing the Infinite Hilarity Hypothesis In Relation To The Big Bang Theory” when she says that she thinks The Big Bang Theory is “The coolest show out there.” Season Two is superb from start to finish without a single misstep.
The simple perfection of The Big Bang Theory lies in the entire package. Serious time and effort are clearly put into the scripts, the actors never fall from character which is a tribute to the flawless direction and comic timing demonstrated on the show. As with any season there are going to be favourite episodes for my own part episode 6 of the season called The Cooper-Nowitzki Theorem is very clever and Sheldoncentric which are my favourite episodes. The most touching moment in the series has to be The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis (a Christmas episode) which was number 11 in the second season. For straight up laughs there is the 15th episode which features an incredible comic performance by veteran comedic actress Christine Baranski. There are no weak episodes but those are my three favourites.
Any fan of comedy who has not seen The Big Bang Theory owes it to themselves to see it and any fan of the series will most definitely have this DVD collection on their shelves.
This set contains 4 DVD’s with 23 episodes, 2 mini documentaries about the making of The Big Bang Theory and of course the obligatory gag reel.
